ITAI CRASH DAY REPORT
FORENSIC
COLLISION
INVESTIGATION
RESEARCH DAY
The IAEA was well-represented at the ITAI Crash Test and Research Day in Derbyshire,
a popular and action-packed research day for forensic collision investigators and industry
professionals – helped by a generous dose of British sunshine!
T
he annual day is
organised by the
Institute of Traf昀椀c
Accident Investigators
(ITAI).
IAEA Council Members, Mark Wells
and Jason Russell, manned the IAEA
stand in the exhibition area, joined
by President Elect, Phil Briggs, and
enjoyed catching up with several fellow
Members and talking to the wide range
of attendees about the IAEA’s activities.
Throughout the day the ITAI team
run a series of staged collisions and a
programme of lectures, alongside an
exhibition of road safety equipment
and tech companies.
IMPACTS
Other crash tests included different
potential damage (vehicle and
occupants) in a saloon car hitting a
traditional steel post versus a hydro
aluminium post, a 50mph T-bone, and
a car hitting a HGV in the ‘truck under
run’ test.
All vehicles are 昀椀tted with telematics
and event data recorders.
This year’s event was presented in
conjunction with Passive Safety UK
and attended by members of the
emergency services, insurers and
engineers, vehicle examiners, highway
management experts, incident scene
mapping and vehicle data capture
specialists, and suppliers of forensic
equipment for vehicle and system
testing, to gain a better understanding
of crash dynamics.
The most dramatic of the eight
planned staged incidents on the main
track saw a Peugeot 207 travelling at
54mph hit a communications cabinet
in the ‘non-passive communications
cabinet’ test. Spectators then observe
the resulting vehicle damage, including
intrusion into the passenger cabinet,
as well as the spread of vehicle debris
created from such an impact. For
comparison, the same test was also
run with a car impacting a passively
safe comms cabinet which sheared
off without transferring unacceptable
deceleration forces on the vehicle
occupants.

IAEA SUPPORT
Mark Wells, Education Of昀椀cer for the
IAEA, said:
“It was a great day to actively witness
what happens in an accident, but
valuable to network with not just other
motor engineers, but others who our
