NISSAN IS USING AI TO REDUCE
PHYSICAL VEHICLE TESTING AND
ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT
Using more than 90 years of vehicle testing data, engineers
at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (in Cran昀椀eld, UK) will use
Monolith’s AI technology to accurately predict the results
of physical tests. This reduces the reliance on physical
prototypes, streamlines the development process and
allows engineers to focus on hands-on problem solving and
decision making.
Nissan and Monolith have announced a three-year extension
to their strategic partnership, using arti昀椀cial intelligence (AI)
to transform the vehicle development process and reduce
the use of physical tests. The partnership will help to bring
products to customers more quickly by reducing vehicle
development time and working with partners to drive
innovation and operational ef昀椀ciency.
First used to validate testing on the new, Sunderland-built
Nissan LEAF electric vehicle, Monolith’s AI technology will be
applied to more tests for Nissan’s future range of models in
Europe.
The decision to extend the partnership follows the successful
collaboration between Nissan and Monolith using AI to
test the performance of bolt joints in vehicle chassis. The
AI technology recommended the optimal torque range for
bolts to be tightened and reliably prioritised additional tests
for engineers to carry out. This resulted in an overall 17%
reduction in physical testing compared to the non-AI process.
Applying the same approach across the development of all
Nissan’s European vehicle range could cut testing time by
half.
First used to validate testing on the new Nissan LEAF,
Monolith’s AI integrated testing will be applied to more tests
for future models due to hit the market in the years ahead.
IMI: AI CAPABILITIES IN

TOYOTA

With the automotive sector highlighted in Skills England’s £400bn growth
plan, the IMI said it urges a swift action to unlock funding for employers.
Nick Connor, CEO, IMI, said “the UK’s AI skills gap needs addressing
and it is particularly signi昀椀cant to see the automotive sector speci昀椀cally
referenced in the report, a clear acknowledgment of its vital role in the UK
and it’s growth, security and net zero ambitions.”
The IMI believes “AI has long been seen as part of automotive’s future
in key areas such as predictive maintenance and real-time analytics. This
also leads to skilled needs in digital literacy, data interpretation and
understanding the ethical implications of AI.”
“This investment in skills is both timely and necessary, with automotive’s
ageing workforce, which could see a signi昀椀cant loss of knowledge leave
the sector by 2032,” said Nick. “The report also highlights particular
issues faced by SMEs in obtaining and embedding AI training, which is
even more acute in automotive due to the 92,000 businesses that have
less than 250 employees. This will ensure our workforce is equipped with
the right digital and AI capabilities is critical.”
