to give as much information as possible looking at the
vehicle operating procedures and vulnerabilities to give you
the insight needed with each distinct vehicle.
JDA works in conjunction with various manufacturers such
as JLR, BMW and are an authorised third party for
Mercedes-Benz.
From various data and tools utilised, they are able to
determine if the transponder within key fobs is original
OEM or has been changed, and provide data on when
the transponder was manufactured with exact date and
month, along with the Key Blades, again if original OEM
or aftermarket. On some key fob transponders, it will
give information on when last used and mileage, which is
essential to compare to reported theft or incident data.
OBSERVATIONS
JDA offer three types of reports:
1. FOUNDATION
LITTLE KEY FOB
The foundation report will give you all the base level
details needed on any fobs or keys. This report will include
observations from the fob with both camera and microscope
images to con昀椀rm any 昀椀ndings. Con昀椀rmation on if the
transponder is coded and can be read and the correct blade
type used in the fob. The report is ideal for anyone looking
to gain basic information on a fob or key and is most often
requested with key blade (contact) ignition vehicles and
bikes.
Stephen Hurst and Jonathan Ashworth then proceeded to
show some information and case examples on a PowerPoint
presentation and information based on key fobs presented.
The attendees found this information very interesting, and
some were surprised by the amount of data that could be
obtained from that “little key fob”.
2. COMPREHENSIVE
The most complete report possible for your forensic
examination. The report consists of a full background on
the vehicle including a complete security vulnerabilities
write-up. A full breakdown of our forensic examination from
our camera and microscope images taken and the details
on the blade including cut code and blade type. The report
will also con昀椀rm full details on the transponder looking at
matching fobs with certain vehicles. The comprehensive
report is our most requested report given the level of detail
provided with the catalogued extensive image library making
this document court-ready if needed.
3. TECHNICAL WRITE-UP
The technical write-up gives you a full breakdown of the
vehicle including security and vulnerabilities. As you may not

for key protection similar to those issued on number plates,
so when duplicate key fobs are produced, they become
traceable. Another case example was shown where the
claimant had put a key in a microwave to attempt to destroy
the data. BMW key fobs are the most advanced and are the
benchmark that other manufacturers should look to improve
upon. JDA also have a comprehensive guide on key fob data
from various manufacturers and what information respective
key fobs hold; this is available upon request.
PHYSICAL EVIDENCE
Stephen and Jonathan where keen to highlight that
often, the only physical evidence that is left as part of
vehicle related crimes are the key fobs. JDA have spent
a considerable amount of time and use of technology to
ensure that as much data can be taken and then presented to
their clients to help them make the most informed decision
possible when it comes to vehicle theft and the potential for
instances of fraud.
