The platform is available with four-wheel drive or rear wheel drive – the power and torque variations refer to peak outputs
available for up to 10 seconds at a time. In the event of impact, the high voltage system (power electronics, motors, inverter,
battery, charger, charge ports) is isolated in two seconds.
Each motor module features self-contained oil cooling, with an oil to water-glycol coolant heat exchanger. The battery uses a
water-glycol heat exchanger on the lower face of the battery pack, which is connected to the standard 昀椀tment heat pump in
the AC circuit (with R1234yf rather than R744 refrigerant) as well as the radiator. Each of the modules sends state of charge and
thermal information to the High Performance Computer (‘HPC’) No5. There are two electric heaters – one for the interior inside
the dash panel and one for the battery to warm it up if required, located on the upper cover.
Overall, the thermal system is typical of a BEV – each system has to be maintained within a speci昀椀c temperature range, which
could require cooling or heating. The side view of the package emphasises the battery pack position at the lowest point of the
vehicle.
VWG Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).
Audi announced the following during 2024:
A5 saloon, A5 Avant – these ‘B10’ models use the Premium Combustion Platform (‘PPC’) and replace ‘B9’ A4 saloon, A4
Avant, A5 coupe, A5 cabriolet as well as A5 Sportback. Oddly the A5 saloon B10 is a Sportback – that’s to say it has a tailgate.
Confused?
Q6 e-tron SUV, Q6 e-tron Sportback, A6 e-tron Sportback and A6 Avant – which were planned to be BEV only. These all use
the Premium Platform Electric (‘PPE’).
Early in 2025 Audi announced that in future the new model name policy of odd numbers being ‘ICE’ and even numbers being
‘BEV’ – was to be abandoned, but only from Q6 / A6 e-tron onwards. The big news is Audi plan to add internal combustion
engines to A6, which will mean using an extended version of the Premium Platform Combustion used on A5.
There are other common themes right across the PPE and PPC range. The HUD now con昀椀gurable with multiple message
arrays, LED matrix day time running lights are user con昀椀gurable, OLED matrix tail lights are also con昀椀gurable, a new form of
additional damper internal valving for the base steel spring systems, adaptive rate air suspension systems, and for the BEVs a
whole gaggle of peak torque / power settings for a whole 10 seconds at a time.
The A5 shares common themes with UHS steel alloy reinforcements in the side frames and large castings for the front strut
towers. Unlike PPE the front chassis legs are steel, and can be sections – in effect the PPE front chassis legs can have the end
plate removed, or the whole leg up to the front bulkhead. Again, unlike PPC, PPE requires the whole leg plus the front strut
tower to be replaced as a single assembly.
