The IAEA's President, David Punter,
presented a session about salvage
categorisation and green parts.
The 2024 Vehicle Recycling Association (VRA) Conference took place in the
Lich昀椀eld Suite at The Belfry on Thursday 10 October, with the IAEA’s President,
David Punter, presenting a session to VRA members and guests about the IAEA,
salvage categorisation and green parts.
The VRA Conference is a popular date in the event calendar and brings members
together to explore new initiatives, breakthroughs, and innovations in the
industry – as well as the chance to network, gain insights, and stay ahead in the
rapidly evolving world of vehicle recycling.

THE SALVAGE CODE
David gave a brief introductory
talk about his background in the
automotive repair and salvage industry,
as well as his involvement with the
IAEA, before sharing a number of
key stats on the Institute including
its 92-year history, membership that
exceeds 1,300 professionals with a
growing reach into regions across
the world. Af昀椀liated to the National
Engineering Council and Members
of the International Federation
of Automotive Experts, the IAEA
comprises a wide and diverse range
of experts, said David. He explained
the steps to Membership: Af昀椀liate,
Associate, Member, Honorary Fellow
and Fellow, the IAEA Code of Conduct,
and the dedication to training and
development (more on this on page 36
of this issue).
David went on to explain the Salvage
Code, the insurance industry code of
practice for dealing with motor salvage,
which was updated in November 2019.

THE AQP
David spoke about the AQP – an
appropriately quali昀椀ed person is
someone who has a comprehensive
technical education and training
record, relevant to motor vehicle repair.
“They will have passed and hold a
current competency-based assessment,
on salvage categorisation, provided
by the IAEA or an equivalent industry
recognised body,” said David. “The
appropriately quali昀椀ed person will
determine and be responsible for the
salvage category given the speci昀椀c
The working AQP remit: work with the
vehicle as a repairable proposition
– can this be safely repaired and
commercially viable to an end user
within the guidance of the code of
practice? If not, de昀椀ne a safe and
controlled route for its disposal under
the code of practice.
STANDARDISATION
David showed a range of images of
Cat N and Cat S vehicles, including
valuations and repair valuations for
each. He spoke about low demand
for parts on older vehicles
(Cat N) – “salvage not viable for
the agent”, and said that, for Cat S,
complex repairs may be compromised
