JOURNAL
PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
It has been a busy and positive period for the Institute, with plenty happening
behind the scenes. As we move through the second half of the year, our focus is
昀椀rmly on strengthening education, improving member support and ensuring our
systems are ready for the future – ideally with fewer spreadsheets and a little less
head-scratching along the way.
Education remains a central priority, not only because it supports the Institute exam, but
because it helps engineers keep pace with a fast-changing profession. We are exploring
a new training platform that can provide a more consistent learning journey and help us
develop CPD courses that meet the needs of today’s engineering community.
This work should improve the learning journey and give engineers practical support to develop their knowledge,
wherever they work. The Education Committee has already made good progress, with Rick Stone, Jason Russell and
Matt Taylor reviewing what the system of the future should look like.
I would really welcome your feedback on how we can better support regions, develop member bene昀椀ts and help
every member feel part of the wider Institute community. Good ideas are always welcome – particularly the practical
ones we can turn into action.
Alongside this work, we have also continued to support technical engagement across the profession. By the time
this edition is published, we will have held the technical day at Thatcham and hosted the FIEA General Assembly.
More detail, including a follow-up article, will be included in the next edition of the journal.
Vehicle technology continues to move at pace, so strong relationships with manufacturers are more important than
ever. Better insight into vehicle construction, ADAS systems and safety technology will help engineers and insurance
providers understand the repair challenges ahead. With this in mind, we are approaching several manufacturers and
plan to include a regular journal section where OEMs can share updates, network news and technical information –
helping us all stay one step ahead of the technology, rather than one step behind it.
Our new website will be an important shop window for the Institute. It will publish engineer details and, in
collaboration with the ABI, will also include a list of quali昀椀ed AQP candidates. This should become a valuable source
of information for members, engineers, insurers and anyone trying to 昀椀nd the right expertise without disappearing
down a search-engine rabbit hole.
As always, thank you for your continued support, feedback and involvement in the Institute. There is a great
deal of positive work taking place, and while not every improvement happens overnight, the direction of travel
is encouraging. I look forward to updating you as these projects develop and hearing your ideas on how we can
continue to strengthen the Institute for all members.
Practical suggestions are always welcome – especially the ones we can turn into actions.
