IAEA INTERVIEW
Martin Brown reported from the London Region
meeting, hosted at the fantastic Caterham HQ.
TEN MINUTES WITH...
MARTIN BROWN
Martin Brown, Manager of Evans Harding Engineers, is a recently-appointed IAEA Council
Member. Here, Martin talks to The Assessors Journal about the importance of CPD for
engineers, the rapid pace of developments in terms of crash repair tech, and how AI can
assist – not replace – the role of the professional automotive engineer.
Q. PLEASE OUTLINE YOUR
NEWLY APPOINTED ROLE,
BOTH WITHIN THE IAEA AND
YOUR “DAY JOB”
I’m a very green council member, only
elected in September of last year. I
have already had an opportunity to
attend an Insurer Day at ITAS as a
representative of the IAEA, where I
arrived questioning whether my input
at this early stage would be of value.
I was pleased to 昀椀nd many of the
questions I raised in advance were
those presented.
to the market which is something I
really enjoy.
I have also already had the opportunity
to be involved in the governance and
future plans for the Institute and how it
may best serve its members in the form
of a National Council meeting.
Q: WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR
DECISION TO JOIN THE IAEA
COUNCIL?
The Institute supported me brilliantly
through my educational and
examination journey. My Region
offered support before I became a
Member by allowing me to attend their
Regional Meetings and CPD events.
Much of the information gained on
the day was subject to an NDA but
hopefully the questions raised from
an engineer’s perspective helped
underwriters make informed decisions.
It also gave me a good taste of
what’s to come from some major
manufacturers and some new entrants
Outside of my role as a Council
member, my day job is being a
Manager at Evans Harding Engineers.
Being an SME, this sees me being
involved in many areas like working
with our administrative team,
measuring performance, forecasting,
recruitment, being in regular contact
with a nationwide network of physical
and desktop engineers, staff training,
client liaison, delivering sales
presentations, regularly attending
seminars, completing physical
inspections and preparing desk top
reports.

I decided I would like to give
something back, help the Institute, and
help the current and future Members.
Having previously served as a
Chairperson for a local charity I
understood that to carry on moving
forwards volunteers are needed. I
also hope to learn from my fellow
Council members and progress both
professionally and personally.
