SURVEY
The IAEA 2025 invites readers of The Assessors Journal
to take part in a Member Engagement Survey.
his survey and
its 昀椀ndings will
complement, assist
and focus the IAEA’s
regional teams, our
new online CPD (coming soon) and our
other interactions via social media and,
of course, our relaunched Assessors
Journal.

“Over the past few years, we have
been working in the background with
partners, systems and solutions to
make the IAEA more resilient, and
relevant in the marketplace,” said
David Punter, President Institute of
Automotive Engineer Assessors.
“We are planning to roll out some
online CPD-style webinars, and also
looking to invigorate the regions to
assist in delivering core content for
Members.
“This brief survey is designed to assist
Council in working with our Members
to 昀椀nd out what you want from the
Institute, so we can review the needs
and help us with our planning for the
future, and, indeed, our next 昀椀ve-year
plan.
“We would also ask that if you wanted
to recommend a speaker, or a subject
for CPD, or are interested in being
part of a regional team or interested in
starting a regional team in your area,
then please do let us know in your
response.”
FEEDBACK
The IAEA would like to thank those
Members who have already completed
the survey. So far, you have told us…
You wish to stay up-to-date with what
the Institute is doing and “keep abreast
of new technology”.
Some topics you want to hear
more on include: hybrid, EV and
hydrogen tech, fraud prevention,
theft and recovery, 昀椀re investigation,
insurance vehicle rating system, crash
investigation, ECUs, metallurgy and
mechanical failure, AI, CDR/EDR crash
data analysis, Chinese vehicles and
repairability, re昀椀nishing techniques and
products, vehicle design and materials,
tyres (EVs and road noise), recent
Court or FOS decisions, storage of and
challenges with sourcing parts, and
inspections/assessments.
In The Assessors Journal, you want
to see more technical articles,
including component failures
and repair procedures, and more
“contemporaneous content”, such as
how assessors have digitalised, best
AIs to use, and how AI is being used in
estimation.
There’s a call for more training
initiatives such as factory tours, IAEA
training day at Thatcham Research,
visits to paint manufacturers and
“places of engineering interest”.
Like other sectors, there’s a shortage
of new entrants and you would like to
see more focus on “helping engineers
in practical ways and helping bring new
“blood” into the profession”.
The IAEA is keen to “restart the
regions” and comments from Members
call for more focus on and action from
the regions, and more for overseas
members.
Members want more information on
changes to legislation relating to motor
vehicles, accident repair centres and
service centres, more examples of
case studies around actual jobs, and
refreshers on AQP and quick delivery

Survey respondents expressed
frustration with “reports from so called
engineers … when they have zero
quali昀椀cations” and call for greater
effort in promoting the role of an IAEA
quali昀椀ed motor assessor in the motor
industry.
“In recent years mechanics and
panel beaters are being paid more
that motor assessors which is really
concerning for the future of the role,”
said one Member.
Another suggested “member
incentives for things like software
licences, hardware and lease vehicles
bringing members together as a group
to increase leverage / purchasing
power. Rising costs and reduced
margins are making it dif昀椀cult for the
independent engineer.”
And requested “campaigns pointing
out why the independent physical
inspection service is so important
in helping beat the concerns with
images modi昀椀ed by AI, and why an
independent engineer who’s only
interest is engineering is best.”
A Member said: “there seems to be
an increasing trend for engineers to be
underquali昀椀ed, and being employed,
or owned by organisations with an
interest in the salvage categorisation,
the salvage value, the hire duration,
the drivablilty, the total repair cost,
or their instructing principals desired
outcome.”
Finally, “it would be great for the IAEA
to get under the table with the major
insurers to give an understanding of
what the IAEA has to offer.”
